Acquisition of nationality after divorce
  1. A person who was married to a Korean spouse and had a domicile in Korea and divorced due to the death or disappearance of the spouse or for reasons not attributable to the spouse (F-6-3)
  2. Custody or support of a minor child born to a marriage to a Korean spouse (F-6-2)
  3. A person who is married to a Korean and has stayed in Korea for more than 2 years after registering as an alien, or who has stayed in Korea for more than 1 year after registering as an alien for more than 3 years.
  1. Application for Naturalization: Attach a photo
  2. A copy of your passport, home country ID (for China, a copy of your residence permit or hukou)
  3. Criminal history certificate of home country
  4. Marriage certificate for a divorced Korean spouse
  5. If you have children, a basic certificate in their name and proof of family relationship
  6. Your explanation for why the marriage ended
    • -How you met your Korean spouse (where and how, whether the wedding was held in Korea)
    • -How to enter Korea (when and how)
    • -Current place of residence (whether or not you live with your spouse)
    • -Living means and future plans (spouse and own job, etc.)
    • -Whether or not to exchange with the Korean spouse’s family
    • -Reasons for suspension or breakdown of marriage (explain why illegal immigrants became illegal)
  7. Documentation of your or your family’s ability to support yourself or your family (optional)
    • – Proof of financial assets (deposits, savings, securities, etc.) of $30,000 or more, and the last 6 months of deposits and withdrawals
    • – Certificate of real estate registration over 30 million won
    • – Rent deposits of $30,000 or more
    • – Proof of employment, salary history, etc.
  8. Documents required to create a family registry

Your spouse is deceased

  • A basic certificate (discharge certificate) or death certificate showing your spouse’s death.

If your spouse is missing

  • Spouse’s basic certification (discharge certificate) showing missing person’s status

You and your spouse are divorced (submit one or more)

  1. Divorce decree
  2. Medical certificates, prosecutor’s decision not to prosecute, criminal judgment, etc.
  3. Mediated divorce decree (divorce through mediation rather than formal trial requires separate and specific proof of spousal assault, infidelity, etc.)
  4. Medical certificates (describing your spouse’s assault), photos of your injuries, etc.
  5. Runaway report of a Korean spouse (except if the police check reveals that the spouse lives in a specific residence)
  6. Verification from a relative or acquaintance (must specifically state the cause of the marriage breakdown, such as a relative within the Korean spouse’s fourth degree of consanguinity or a verification from the Tongban of the place of residence at the time of the marriage breakdown)
  7. Affidavit from a recognized women’s organization]
  8. Other proof that you were unable to live a normal marriage through no fault of your own

When raising minor children

  1. Divorce decree, divorce declaration, or other documents that confirm child support.
  2. Child’s birth certificate, family relationship certificate, and applicant’s marriage certificate (in detail)
  3. Child care expenses (school fees, medical bills, etc.)

Written exams

  1. Select the date you want from the comprehensive evaluation schedule for naturalization of the Social Integration Program (KIIP) and take the test.
  2. You must take the test within one year from the date of application for naturalization permission, and you will be given up to three times.
  3. If you pass only the comprehensive assessment for naturalization without completing the social integration program curriculum (step 5), then an interview is required
  4. After completing the social integration program curriculum (step 5) and passing the comprehensive evaluation for naturalization, the interview screening is exempted.
