F-5-15 Permanent Resident Card: Holders of a domestic doctorate in general fields

If you have completed a regular course at a domestic graduate school and obtained a doctoral degree (*excluding those who are expected to acquire it) and have worked for a domestic company for more than one year, you can apply for F-5-15 Permanent Residence. Regardless of the field of study for the degree, the KIIP Program, which is the biggest obstacle to permanent residence in general, is also exempted. Income requirements are also not very high as they are 1x GNI.

If you look at these conditions, you might think that you can easily get permanent residency if you get a doctorate in Korea, but there are unexpected obstacles.

Prerequisite

1. Conduct judgment requirements

  • – A person who has been sentenced to imprisonment without prison labor or a heavier punishment, and for whom five years have not elapsed from the date the execution was terminated;
  • – A person for whom three years have not elapsed since the date of payment of the penalty sentence
  • – Persons who have violated the Immigration Control Act 3 times or more in the 5 years prior to the date of application, excluding fines for negligence
  • – A person whose 7 years have not elapsed since the date of deportation after receiving an order of deportation or 5 years had not passed since the date of departure from the country after receiving the deportation order
  • – A person who has been sentenced to a sentence of imprisonment without prison labor or heavier punishment for other crimes in a foreign country such as intimidation, blackmail, fraud, voice phishing, or drug crimes
  • – Persons who have been subject to a fine of 5 million won or more for violating the Immigration Control Act for the past 3 years, or have a combined fine of 7 million won or more
  • This refers to cases in which the requirements for studying abroad (D-2) such as a doctoral program (D-2-4) are satisfied, and does not apply to cases where only a degree has been obtained without completing a prescribed course at a domestic graduate school.
  • Must have been working for more than 1 year as a full-time employee at a domestic company. (It is possible to add up the working period of the past workplace)

Basic documents to be submitted

  • Copy of Ph.D. degree *If necessary, additional transcripts can be requested.
  • Copy of business registration certificate of affiliated company, certificate of employment
  • Documents confirming full-time employment, such as a list of four major insurance companies, employment contracts, etc.

Income condition: GNI 1 times (approximately 37.5 million won)

Overseas PhD holders in high-tech fields can apply for F-5-9

A person who has obtained a Ph.D. degree abroad and who is employed by a domestic company at the time of application for F-5 permanent residence can apply.

Prerequisite

  • A doctoral degree must be obtained in the high-tech field (*Excluding those who are expected to acquire it)
  • High-tech fields: According to Article 5 of the Industrial Development Act, there are IT, technology management, nano, digital electronics, bio, transportation and machinery, new materials, environment and energy. (Major field must be confirmed)
  • Must have been working for at least 1 year as a full-time employee in a field related to the degree held by a domestic company

Basic documents to be submitted

  • Copy of Ph.D. degree *If necessary, additional transcripts can be requested.
  • Copy of business registration certificate of affiliated company, certificate of employment
